Who are we looking for


The Ceraneum Center is seeking two individuals with a Ph.D. to conduct research on Greek sources as part of the project: “Heretics and non-Christians in Orthodox Balkans and Asia Minor, 10th to 15th century: reality and imagination”. All applicants should have:

– PhD obtained from an institution other than UŁ (or from UŁ if he or she completed a post-doctoral research stay abroad of at least 10 months), not earlier than 01.01.2014 or 12 years before the start of the employment [excluding sick or maternity leaves – see NCN regulations at https://ncn.gov.pl/sites/default/files/pliki/uchwaly-rady/2024/uchwala86_2024-zal1.pdf], in social sciences (preferably in political and administrative sciences or international relations);

– experience conducting independent research in the field of historical or historical-literary analysis of literary sources;

– a good understanding of ancient or medieval Greek;

– conversational skills in English;

– knowledge of other extinct languages: Old Church Slavonic, Latin, or Greek paleography; a substantial publication record; and experience in preparing editions of medieval source texts will be considered additional assets.

Candidates should meet the requirements of Article 113, Article 116 of the Law of 20 July 2018. Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws 2018, item 1668). The candidate must have no criminal record for the crimes specified in Chapter XIX and XXV of the Penal Code, in Article 189a and Article 207 of the Penal Code and in the Act of 29 July 2005 on Counteracting Drug Addiction (Journal of Laws of 2023, item 1939) and for the prohibited acts specified in foreign law corresponding to these crimes.

Job description

1. Conducting research on the social situation of non-orthodox people in the Byzantine Empire, as well as on the themes and linguistic characteristics of anti-heretical Byzantine texts.

2. Participating in project team meetings in Łódź.

3. Preparing academic publications.


Employment Restrictions in the Project

- During the period of receiving remuneration from the project, the employed person cannot be employed by another employer under an employment contract, including employers based outside of Poland.

- During the period of receiving remuneration from the project, the employed person cannot receive additional remuneration from direct costs of research projects funded under National Science Centre (NCN) competitions.
