DESCRIPTION:
The candidate must meet the requirements of article 113 and article 116 of the Act of 20 July 2018 ‒ Law on Higher Education and Science (The Official Journal of Laws of 2018, item 1668, with amendments) and the Statute of the University of Lodz, taking into account article 246 section 5 of the Act of 3 July 2018 – Regulations introducing the Act Law on Higher Education and Science (The Official Journal of Laws of 2018, item 1669).
We are looking for a researcher who can think outside the box, demonstrate strong motivation and positive energy, as well as excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. The selected researcher will be involved in the project “EHo-ShA: Evolutionary history of shallow and deep-sea Apseudomorpha (Tanaidacea: Peracarida)”, which focuses on the study of small marine crustaceans in the suborder Apseudomorpha. Its implementation will: a) assess the geological time of evolution of crustaceans of the suborder Apseudomorpha, b) indicate the place of radiation of the last common ancestor of Apseudomorpha, c) determine the evolutionary relationships (phylogeny) of the families within Apseudomorpha and identify their common morphological features (apomorphies), d) identify ecological factors influencing morphological changes (adaptations), and e) estimate the geological time of colonization of the deep ocean by Apseudomorpha.
REQUIREMENTS:
The candidate should meet the following criteria and:
1. Hold a PhD degree recognized in Poland obtained in 2017 or later in the field of biology, genetics, evolutionary ecology or a related field or a document confirming the award of such a doctoral degree.
2. Be fluent in written and spoken English.
3. Have experience working in a molecular biology laboratory (e.g. in DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, DNA libraries), as demonstrated by high-quality publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
4. Have experience in the generation and analysis of genetic/genomic data, as demonstrated by high-quality publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
5. Have good interpersonal skills, experience in working successfully as part of a research team, as well as be able to work independently.
Additional advantages are:
• Experience in the generation, maintenance and use of large datasets and databases.
• Knowledge of invertebrate taxonomy.
• Analytical thinking, curiosity, and creativity, ability to recognize scientific questions and to find appropriate ways to seek the answers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate in safeguarding, cataloguing, and organizing peracarid samples that will be used in the studies
- Collaborate in the obtention of genetic data for the aims of the project
- Collaborate in the safeguarding, organization, selection, and analyses of the available data for the aims of the project
- Participate actively in scientific activities for the coordination and proper functioning of the team, such as meetings or personal communications;
- Collaborate in the production of scientific papers to be published in high-quality peer-reviewed journals, as well as prepare publications independently
- Obtain funds for scientific research by applying in competitions at national or international level;
- Collaborate in the dissemination of scientific results and the promotion of the department by participating in scientific conferences, workshops, outreach activities;
- Cooperate in the supervision of technical staff and students;
The selected candidate will have the chance to be part of an international team with a significant research record, with access to laboratories, facilities, and scientific resources, well be able to participate in scientific trips to museums, e.g. in Gainesville (Florida, USA), Cape Town (South Africa), Frankfurt (Germany), and establish cooperations with experts in the fields of phylogenomics, invertebrate taxonomy, and animal evolution, and will have the opportunity to benefit from training and educational events to improve their scientific and professional skills.
