Recruitment announcement for the position of PhD student - scholarship holder in the project entitled "BioMeTP: Biodiversity, biogeography and metatranscriptomics of endangered temporary ponds in the Mediterranean region" financed by the National Science Centre under the SONATA 19 competition.


Who we are looking for:

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD student to join an exciting research project focused on biodiversity and connectivity of temporary ponds in the Western Balkans and Apulia (Italy) using barcoding and environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques.


Opis zadań/Description of tasks

1. Develop and optimize barcoding reference libraries and eDNA protocols for biodiversity assessment.

2. Conduct fieldwork to collect water and environmental samples from temporary ponds in the Western Balkans and Apulia.

3. Develop reference libraries for key invertebrate groups using ONT technologies.

4. Extract, amplify, and sequence DNA from environmental samples using state-of-the-art molecular techniques.

5. Analyze biodiversity data using bioinformatics tools to identify paleo and contemporary connections between the two regions.

6. Collaborate with international researchers to analyze and interpret findings.

7. Present research findings at conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.



Wymagania/Requirements

  • Compliance with the requirements specified in the Regulations for awarding NCN research grants in research projects financed by the National Science Centre, introduced by Resolution No. 124/2022 of the Council of the National Science Centre of December 1, 2022, financed by the National Science Centre under the SONATA 19 competition.
  • Excitement about science and learning more about nature.
  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Molecular Biology, Ecology, Bioinformatics, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with DNA extraction, PCR, and sequencing techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of bioinformatics tools and data analysis.
  • Willingness to conduct fieldwork, including travel to field sites in the Western Balkans and Apulia.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken).
  • PhD student status at the BioMedChem Doctoral School of the University of Lodz.
